Loblaw expands AI vision technology to distribution gates

Loblaw Companies is expanding its deployment of AI-powered gate automation technology across multiple distribution centers, building on an existing partnership with Canadian computer vision platform EAIGLE. The rollout aims to reduce vehicle processing times and increase operational visibility at critical supply chain entry points.

The technology, called AVAC (Automated Vehicle Access Control), uses vision AI to automate routine gate processes that traditionally require manual inspection and data entry. According to the companies, early deployments have demonstrated measurable improvements in processing speed, driver experience, and data accuracy at both gate and yard operations.

Distribution center gates represent a persistent bottleneck in retail supply chains, where manual vehicle check-in creates delays that ripple through delivery schedules. By automating these checkpoints with computer vision, Loblaw can process higher truck volumes without adding labor—a critical capability as grocery e-commerce and home delivery continue expanding. The approach also transforms gates from passive entry points into real-time data sources that feed warehouse management and transportation systems.

How the system works

EAIGLE's platform applies computer vision to capture vehicle information automatically as trucks arrive, eliminating manual data entry and reducing human error. The system integrates directly with existing warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), yard management systems (YMS), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms.

This integration allows the gate to function as an intelligence layer rather than an administrative checkpoint. Real-time vehicle data flows immediately into downstream systems, enabling better dock scheduling, inventory planning, and route optimization.

"We're always looking for practical ways to improve how products move through our network so we can better serve our customers," said Wael Yehia, vice president of national transportation at Loblaw. "Working with Canadian innovators like EAIGLE allows us to leverage technologies that can help improve efficiency, support our operations teams and keep products moving reliably across our network."

Scaling proven technology

The expanded deployment follows successful pilot implementations at select Loblaw facilities. Rather than introducing unproven technology across the network, the company is scaling a system that has already demonstrated operational benefits in live environments.

"This is about scaling what works in real operations, a practical and measurable use of applied AI in [the] supply chain," said Amir Hoss, CEO of EAIGLE, which is based in Markham, Ontario. "It should strengthen existing workflows, not replace them. What we're seeing with Loblaw is a clear example of how vision AI can be deployed at scale to improve consistency, throughput and visibility across facilities."

Loblaw operates more than 2,800 stores across Canada and employs over 220,000 people, making it the country's largest retailer and private-sector employer. The company ranks 19th on Progressive Grocer's 2026 list of North America's top food and consumables retailers.
