John Deere Launches Fully Automated Baling for Round Balers

New hands-free system combines guidance, gate control, and speed automation to reduce operator workload and boost productivity.

Integrated automation system debuts at Farm Progress Show

John Deere has introduced a hands-free baling feature that automates the entire round baling process on select equipment configurations. The system integrates AutoTrac guidance, turn automation, gate automation, speed automation, and weave automation into a unified solution for the company's 1 Series Round Balers.

The technology allows operators to step away from active controls while the baler follows windrows based on guidance data from previous combine passes. The system manages tractor speed, controls the bale chamber gate, and handles wrapping and ejection timing without manual intervention. Headland turns execute automatically with repeatable precision.

Automated baling addresses a persistent challenge in hay production: maintaining consistent quality during long, repetitive work sessions. By removing the need for constant operator attention, the technology enables farms to deploy less experienced workers on baling tasks while freeing skilled operators for higher-priority activities. The productivity gains also matter during narrow harvest windows when weather conditions are optimal.

Productivity and cost benefits

According to Kaylene Ballesteros, marketing manager for hay and forage equipment at John Deere, internal testing demonstrated measurable improvements in both output and efficiency. The automation produces more bales per hour while reducing fuel consumption and operator input requirements.

"By automating the baling process, we're helping operators simplify their job and reduce the opportunity for error," Ballesteros said. She characterized the development as customer-driven, noting it "makes a repetitive baling job easier and more efficient."

The system creates consistent, square-shouldered bales through coordinated control of multiple machine functions. Speed automation adjusts tractor velocity based on crop flow, while gate automation ensures proper bale density and timing.

Equipment requirements

The hands-free baling feature is available on select John Deere 1 Series Round Balers when paired with 6R, 7R, or 8R Series Tractors. The tractor must be equipped with required precision agriculture technologies, including Weave Automation capability.

Ballesteros emphasized that the automation makes long field days more manageable by reducing the physical and mental demands on operators. "When you can produce more bales per hour while using less fuel and requiring fewer inputs from the operator, you get the freedom to focus on what is most important to you," she said.
