John Deere Hands-Free Baling Cuts Operator Activity by 76%

Farm Progress Show debut for integrated baling automation

John Deere demonstrated a hands-free baling system at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, that the company says can reduce in-cab operator activity by up to 76 percent. The technology integrates existing precision features—AutoTrac, AutoTurn, and tractor-baler automation—with new Weave Automation on the company's RB baler line.

Kaylene Ballesteros, John Deere's Hay and Forage Market Manager, told RFD-TV that the system represents an extension of automation many farmers already use rather than a wholesale equipment replacement. The technology targets operations baling corn stalks, wheat straw, and similar materials.

Hay and forage producers often face narrow weather windows and extended baling sessions that can stretch into early morning hours. Automation that maintains consistent paths and bale density while freeing operators to monitor other fields or handle administrative tasks addresses a specific pain point in operations where timing and operator stamina directly affect productivity and fuel costs.

Building on existing precision investments

The approach focuses on extracting more value from equipment farmers have already purchased. Testing has shown improvements in both productivity and fuel efficiency alongside the reduction in required operator inputs. The system maintains more consistent travel paths during baling, which reduces unnecessary movement and the fuel consumption that comes with it.

Ballesteros said producers specifically requested technology that would deliver less mental fatigue, more consistent bale density, and better returns on their existing precision agriculture investments.

Flexibility for different operator experience levels

The automation serves two distinct use cases. Experienced operators who already produce consistent, square-shouldered bales can delegate more of the mechanical process to the equipment, freeing attention for other responsibilities during peak season. Less experienced operators gain a technological baseline that helps them achieve more uniform results.

For operations where baling extends through the night or across multiple consecutive days, reducing the mental and physical demands on whoever is in the cab becomes particularly valuable. "We're just trying to help them have more tools in their toolbox so that when they do need them, they can pull them out and use them," Ballesteros said.

The Farm Progress Show, described as the largest outdoor agricultural event in the United States, drew thousands of farmers and ranchers to Iowa for equipment demonstrations and technology showcases.
