Google launches voice assistants for Gmail, Docs, and Keep

Google has begun rolling out conversational voice assistants for three of its core productivity applications, bringing hands-free AI capabilities to Gmail, Docs, and Keep through features called Gmail Live, Docs Live, and Keep Live.

The new voice modes enable users to interact with these applications through natural conversation, similar to the Gemini Live experience Google previously launched for its chatbot. The features are designed for scenarios where manual interaction is impractical, such as when driving or multitasking.

How each voice assistant works

Gmail Live focuses on extracting information from email without requiring users to search through threads manually. Users can ask questions like "when is my kid's next school event?" and receive a verbal summary drawn from relevant emails, with source links displayed in an on-screen transcript. The assistant supports follow-up questions within the same conversation and allows mid-sentence interruptions to change topics.

Docs Live transforms conversational input into structured documents. Users can request document summaries or ask the assistant to convert content into specific formats like business proposals. When granted permission, the feature can pull information from Gmail, Drive, Chat, and web sources to personalize outputs.

Keep Live provides transcription services that contextualize spoken input without requiring precise phrasing. Users can make natural requests such as "add ingredients for pesto to my shopping list," and the assistant will interpret and organize the information appropriately.

Why it matters

These voice assistants represent Google's effort to embed conversational AI directly into workflow tools rather than keeping it siloed in standalone chatbots. By integrating voice capabilities into applications people already use daily, Google is betting that contextual AI assistance—with access to emails, documents, and notes—will prove more valuable than general-purpose chat interfaces. The move also positions Google's productivity suite as a differentiated offering against competitors like Microsoft, which has taken a different approach with Copilot.

Availability and rollout

The features are launching globally on mobile platforms in English, following their preview at Google I/O in May. Gmail Live is available on both iOS and Android for users subscribed to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans. Docs Live works on iOS and Android for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, while Keep Live is Android-only and requires AI Pro or Ultra plans.

Google Workspace business customers will receive access to all three features in the near future, though the company has not specified an exact timeline.
