Google expands AI Mode into travel booking

Google has transformed its AI Mode conversational search into a functional travel agent, adding capabilities to track flight prices, complete hotel reservations, and calculate costs in loyalty points. The updates move the tool beyond information retrieval into transaction completion, according to an announcement from the company.

Users can now describe travel plans to AI Mode and receive flight options from more than 300 airlines and travel sites with current pricing. The system supports price monitoring across these options — when users request tracking, they receive email alerts if fares change for their selected routes and dates. This flight price tracking feature is available in over 180 countries.

Hotel booking through conversation

The hotel booking workflow allows users to specify trip details and preferences through natural language. AI Mode then surfaces options with reviews and key factors, letting travelers compare properties conversationally.

When a user selects a hotel, they choose "Continue on Google" from options that include integrated partners. The booking flow then moves to room selection, policy review, and payment through Google Pay. Google clarifies that partner hotels or booking platforms handle the actual reservation and any subsequent customer service.

The hotel booking feature is rolling out in the United States in English over the coming weeks. Launch partners include Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.

Loyalty program integration

AI Mode now displays travel costs in frequent flyer miles and hotel points. Users can specify their loyalty program when searching — for example, requesting nonstop flights between cities using airline miles for specific dates. The system then shows how many miles are required for matching flights. This points and miles display is available globally.

Why it matters

Google's move into transactional travel services puts it in direct competition with established online travel agencies and metasearch platforms. By embedding booking capabilities within its AI interface, Google can capture more of the travel purchase funnel rather than simply referring users to third-party sites. The integration of loyalty program pricing addresses a pain point that typically requires checking multiple airline and hotel sites separately. For travel industry partners, the question becomes whether Google's AI Mode drives incremental bookings or simply shifts existing traffic through a new channel with different economics.
