Google Adds Face Video Recovery Option for Locked Accounts

Users can now record a selfie video as a backup authentication method when they lose access to their primary devices or passkeys.

Google has introduced a selfie video feature that lets users recover access to locked accounts by recording their face, adding another layer to its account recovery toolkit alongside backup codes and recovery contacts.

The feature addresses a common pain point: getting locked out of a Google account after losing a device, particularly when passkeys or other authentication methods are stored on that missing hardware. According to Claire Forszt, a product manager at Google focused on identity and engagement, the company designed the tool specifically for these vulnerable scenarios.

How the setup works

Users must configure the selfie video before they need it—the option isn't available during an active lockout. The setup process takes under five minutes and requires recording a short video where you lift your chin toward the ceiling, then return to center while looking directly at the camera.

Google's system has specific requirements: your face must remain visible with eyes pointed at the camera in standard lighting, and no other faces can appear in the frame—even in background photos. The feature is rolling out globally to most accounts and appears in the Security & sign-in tab under "How you sign in to Google."

Deepfake protections and privacy controls

Google says it employs liveness detection to guard against deepfake attacks. The company may require additional verification beyond the selfie video if it detects suspicious activity based on multiple risk factors.

During setup, users face a choice about data usage. An optional checkbox asks whether Google can use the selfie video and related data to train facial recognition, age estimation, and other verification systems across its services. Users can modify this setting later through privacy controls labeled "Improve Google services."

Why it matters

Account recovery remains a critical security challenge as authentication methods grow more sophisticated. While passkeys and hardware tokens offer strong protection, they create recovery problems when users lose physical access to their devices. Biometric backup options like selfie videos provide a middle path—harder to steal than passwords, but available when hardware is lost. The opt-in approach contrasts with recent controversies around Meta's AI features, which automatically enrolled users before public backlash forced a reversal.
