GenAI Patent Filings Nearly Double in One Year, WIPO Reports
New data shows generative AI patents surged to 37,808 families in 2025, with the technology moving from lab to market faster than any previous wave.

Generative AI patent activity has reached unprecedented levels, according to a new report from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The number of GenAI patent families nearly doubled between 2024 and 2025, climbing from 18,862 to 37,808. GenAI now represents 8.7% of all AI patent families, up from 6.1% in 2023.
The surge reflects more than incremental progress. Over 56,000 new GenAI patent families were recorded in 2024-2025 alone—exceeding the total from the entire preceding decade combined.

Unlike earlier technology waves where patents preceded commercialization by years, GenAI patents signal technology already embedded in products and markets. This compressed timeline from invention to adoption is reshaping infrastructure industries—chips, data centers, cooling systems—and forcing businesses across healthcare, finance, and manufacturing to adapt at unprecedented speed. Geographic shifts in AI innovation
China maintains its lead in total GenAI patent volume, publishing more than 43,000 patent families across 2024 and 2025. However, growth has become more distributed globally. The United States climbed from approximately 1,185 patent families in 2023 to over 4,380 in 2025, establishing itself as the second major hub.
Japan recorded the sharpest increase with a 210% annual growth rate, driven largely by SoftBank Group Corp., which has become the world's largest GenAI patent holder with 2,985 patent families. Germany surpassed the United Kingdom to lead Europe in GenAI patents, while Canada and Switzerland also posted significant gains.
From software to infrastructure
The GenAI patent boom extends beyond algorithms and models into the physical infrastructure required to run them. As systems demand more computational power, innovation is shifting to hardware: specialized chips, memory architectures, server farms, and energy solutions. The technology's resource intensity is creating pressure—and opportunity—across the entire operational ecosystem.
GenAI applications are already penetrating manufacturing, finance, healthcare, and energy sectors. In drug development, AI is being deployed to design clinical trials, select molecules, and compress development timelines. In agriculture and food technology, AI systems analyze field data in real time to optimize yields and reduce waste.
Israel's patent position
Israel ranks second globally in AI patent applications per capita, according to the country's National Council for Civilian Research and Development. However, its growth rate lags behind Sweden, Germany, and South Korea. Foreign R&D centers and international tech companies lead inventive activity in Israel ahead of domestic firms.
Prof. Nava Ratzon, chair of the Council, emphasized that patent volume alone isn't the measure of success. The critical test is how many patents translate into growing companies and quality employment. She called for a multiyear national AI program with measurable targets, proper funding, and a continuum from research through commercialization to market adoption.

As the technology deepens its presence in core industries, the connection between AI innovation and the real economy will strengthen.
