Gemini Task Automation Expands to 40+ Apps on Samsung Devices

Google announced major expansions to its Gemini AI capabilities at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event, centered on the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Fold 8, and Flip 8 devices. The most substantial update brings Gemini task automation to more than 40 applications, a significant jump from the six rideshare and delivery apps supported when the feature entered beta earlier this year on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 devices.

The expanded app roster now covers shopping platforms like Etsy, travel booking services including Expedia, restaurant reservations, and event ticketing. Samsung's Flip 8 adds a convenience layer by enabling access to these automation features directly from the Flex Window cover screen through a long-press of the power button.

New screen understanding and reasoning

Gemini's capabilities now extend to advanced visual reasoning. The assistant can analyze on-screen content and interpret complex images used as prompts, allowing users to show rather than describe what they need. Google positions this as particularly useful for shopping lists or reference photos that would be cumbersome to explain through text.

The renamed Gemini Notebook comes pre-installed on Samsung's new foldables, taking advantage of the Fold 8's larger display. Users can drag and drop multiple content types—photos, documents, whiteboard images, and voice recordings—into a side-by-side workspace for organization and reference.

The expansion from six to over 40 supported apps represents a critical threshold for AI task automation. Enterprise and consumer adoption of AI assistants depends heavily on breadth of integration—users won't rely on automation that only works with a handful of services. iPhone migration and wearable integration

Google also detailed improvements to Android's iPhone migration experience, now part of Android 17. The enhanced process transfers Google Accounts, passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIM data wirelessly, supplementing the existing support for photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendar entries. The feature launches on Samsung's new devices before rolling out to Pixel phones and other Android hardware.

On wearables, the Galaxy Watch 9 gains wrist-raise activation for Gemini, eliminating the need for a wake word—matching functionality already available on the Pixel Watch 4.

All three Samsung foldable models include six months of Google AI Pro subscription. Samsung and Google also previewed additional frame designs for their upcoming Android XR glasses from partners Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, ahead of a fall launch.
