The turbines themselves are massive industrial machines—31 feet tall, weighing 280 tons, capable of powering approximately 500,000 homes each.

Microsoft recently purchased seven turbines to supply 2.7 gigawatts for a Texas data center, enough electricity for about 3 million homes. GE Vernova turbines are already operational at Elon Musk's xAI Colossus facility in Tennessee, and nearly a gigawatt of additional capacity is being deployed for OpenAI's Stargate project in Texas, according to Cleanview, which tracks data center development.

Price surge reflects supply constraints

Industry analysts at Melius estimate turbine prices have increased 300% over the past three years, with individual units now costing more than $250 million. The steep price escalation underscores the supply-demand imbalance as hyperscalers compete for limited manufacturing capacity.

"Right now, when you need power at scale and you need firm power, the industrial gas turbine is one of the leading solutions for that," Koziner said.

The company has responded by accelerating production timelines, with engineers working directly alongside factory workers to compress manufacturing cycles for the complex machines.

Environmental and regulatory headwinds

Public opposition to data center development and environmental concerns represent potential obstacles to continued expansion. GE Vernova emphasized its focus on efficiency improvements, with current turbine models delivering twice the efficiency of units produced two decades ago.

The company's stock has gained nearly 60% over the past six months as investors price in the sustained demand from AI infrastructure buildout.
