Equinix Fabric One to automate multi-cloud and AI connectivity
The managed service will use open specifications from AWS and Google Cloud to orchestrate connections across distributed infrastructure without manual configuration.

Equinix has unveiled Equinix Fabric One, a managed connectivity service designed to eliminate manual network configuration across distributed cloud, AI, and enterprise infrastructure. The announcement came at Equinix Horizon, the company's inaugural customer event, on September 2, 2026, as first reported by Equinix.
The service represents a shift from traditional connection-by-connection networking to an intent-driven model. Enterprises will specify what needs to connect and their requirements through portals, APIs, automation workflows, or natural-language prompts. Equinix Fabric One then automatically orchestrates routing, cloud connectivity, encryption, resiliency, and failover as a single managed service.
Why it matters
As enterprises deploy AI workloads across multiple clouds and edge locations, networking complexity has become a bottleneck. Every new connection typically requires specialized expertise, cross-functional coordination, and ongoing management—slowing deployment cycles and making infrastructure harder to scale. An automated, intent-driven approach could significantly reduce operational overhead while supporting the dynamic connectivity patterns that distributed AI architectures demand.
Built on open standards with AWS and Google Cloud
Equinix Fabric One leverages the OpenAPI 3.0 Interconnect specification, an open-source standard that AWS and Google Cloud collaborated to develop. This specification preserves interoperability across distributed AI, cloud, and enterprise environments while enabling programmatic connectivity provisioning.
"Customers shouldn't have to figure out how to connect across multiple clouds and AI environments on their own," said Robert Kennedy, Vice President of AWS network services. "They should just define what they need and have it work."
Rob Enns, Vice President of Engineering for Cloud Networking at Google Cloud, emphasized that cross-cloud interoperability is foundational for AI deployments. By combining Google Cloud's Cross-Cloud Network capabilities with Equinix Fabric One, the companies aim to deliver automated, intent-driven networking for distributed AI workloads.
Addressing enterprise networking complexity
Chris Audie, Chief Product Officer at Equinix, noted that traditional enterprise networks built one connection at a time cannot scale for distributed AI requiring dynamic, flexible, and real-time connectivity. Equinix Fabric One aims to reduce this complexity by automatically managing connectivity based on customer intent.
The service builds on Equinix's existing infrastructure of more than 10,500 interconnected businesses, approximately 3,000 cloud and IT providers, and deployments by eight of the top 10 AI model providers and nine of the top 10 neoclouds. This neutral exchange position allows enterprises to connect across providers while maintaining architectural flexibility.
Andrew Buss, Senior Research Director for Cloud and Datacenters at IDC, observed that networking remains heavily dependent on manual design and operations. Organizations increasingly seek ways to simplify and automate connectivity provisioning across distributed environments, though achieving this transformation remains challenging.
Availability and roadmap
Equinix Fabric One is expected to enter beta later in 2026, with general availability planned for 2027. Initial rollout will focus on North America. Details on pricing and specific feature sets were not disclosed in the announcement.
Equinix also announced Equinix Inference Exchange at the same event to accelerate enterprise AI infrastructure deployments, though details on that service were limited in the release.
