The Genesis Mission, as the initiative is known, selected its awardees from over 5,000 applications, Energy Secretary Chris Wright disclosed at a Wednesday summit. The funded projects span biomedical research, energy grid reliability, national security applications, quantum computing, and microelectronics manufacturing.
The largest single award—$60 million—targets the deployment of AI tools to accelerate nuclear energy facility launches while reducing operational costs.

Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil outlined several benchmarks for evaluating the initiative's impact: advances in quantum computing capabilities, development of robust open-source and frontier AI models, expansion of the early-career scientist pipeline, and construction of advanced AI supercomputing infrastructure.
"Through the Genesis Mission, we are bringing together the nation's leading researchers, institutions, and technology partners to build the next generation of scientific capability," Gil said in a statement.

The Genesis Mission was established through an executive order issued in November. Kratsios characterized it as part of a larger transformation in how the federal government approaches scientific research funding and execution.
