Emerald AI secures unicorn valuation for grid-responsive data center technology
Emerald AI has closed a $150 million Series A round at a $1.05 billion valuation, bringing total funding to more than $220 million as the company commercializes software that makes AI data centers dynamically adjust power consumption based on grid conditions.
The oversubscribed round was co-led by Energize Capital and DCVC, with participation from NVIDIA, Samsung Ventures, Siemens, Aramco Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, GE Vernova, and other strategic investors. Twelve Fortune Global 500 companies now hold stakes in the company and participate on its Strategic Advisory Board.
Why it matters
Data centers are projected to account for nearly half of U.S. electricity demand growth through 2030, according to the International Energy Agency, while new grid infrastructure typically requires a decade or more to build. Emerald AI's approach addresses a fundamental constraint: rather than waiting for new power generation and transmission, the technology enables existing grid capacity to support substantially more AI infrastructure by making that infrastructure responsive to real-time grid conditions.
From demonstrations to commercial deployment
Emerald AI has completed five commercial demonstrations across Arizona, Illinois, Virginia, Oregon, and London, working with partners including NVIDIA, Oracle, National Grid, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The company has now entered commercial scaling, with its Emerald Conductor platform deployed at multi-megawatt, full data center scale in California, where it demonstrated grid-responsive flexibility during peak demand periods.
The software orchestrates AI computational workloads and onsite energy resources to control a facility's power draw when the grid experiences stress, while maintaining performance for critical AI workloads. According to the company, this approach can unlock more than 100 gigawatts of capacity on the existing U.S. grid—power available years before new infrastructure could be constructed.
Partnerships reshaping data center interconnection
Emerald AI partnered with Silicon Valley Power to launch what it describes as the nation's first Flexible Load Interconnection Program, which grants data centers expanded grid access in exchange for verified, dispatchable flexibility. In Manassas, Virginia, the company is working with Digital Realty and NVIDIA on the Vera Rubin AI Research Factory, a nearly 100-megawatt facility tested in collaboration with EPRI, Dominion Energy, and the PJM Interconnection grid operator. That facility is scheduled to come online later this year.

Emerald AI's customer base now spans AI companies, data center operators, and electric utilities. The company was founded by Dr. Varun Sivaram and was recently named to the 2026 TIME 100 Most Influential Companies list and recognized as a 2026 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.
