Disney Hires Character.AI CEO as First-Ever CTO

Karandeep Anand joins Disney a year after the company sent his former startup a copyright cease-and-desist letter.

Disney has appointed Karandeep Anand as its first chief technology officer, a newly created role that signals CEO Josh D'Amaro's ambition to position the entertainment giant as a technology-driven company. Anand, who most recently served as CEO of generative AI chatbot startup Character.AI, will join Disney on October 2.

The appointment comes with an ironic backstory: approximately one year ago, Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter accusing the startup of "blatantly infringing" its copyrights by featuring Disney characters on its platform. Character.AI complied with the removal request. Now, Disney is not only hiring Anand but also bringing on several members of Character.AI's technical team.

Why it matters

This hire represents a strategic shift for Disney under D'Amaro's leadership. By creating a CTO position for the first time in company history, Disney is elevating technology from a support function to a core strategic priority. The move suggests Disney recognizes that competing in modern entertainment requires infrastructure, AI capabilities, and direct-to-consumer technology on par with digital-native companies—not just creative excellence.

Anand's Background

Anand brings extensive experience across consumer technology, infrastructure, and AI. Before Character.AI, he served as president and chief product officer at financial technology company Brex. Prior to that, he held multiple leadership positions at Meta's Facebook, most recently as vice president of ads and business products.

His career also includes 15 years at Microsoft, where he held senior product and engineering roles and contributed to building the Azure cloud-computing platform. He holds a computer science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, and a marketing and strategy certification from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

The CTO Role

As senior executive vice president and CTO, Anand will report directly to D'Amaro. His responsibilities will span enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering. He will work across technology teams in Disney's various business segments to modernize how the company builds and delivers technology company-wide.

Disney previously had no CTO position. Its highest-ranking technology executive was Adam Smith, whom Disney promoted Thursday to chairman of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment. Disney hired Smith from YouTube in 2024 as chief product and technology officer for Disney Entertainment and ESPN.

Strategic Direction

According to Disney, the CTO appointment reflects D'Amaro's focus on technology as a growth driver. Since becoming CEO in March, D'Amaro has emphasized strengthening Disney's direct relationships with fans by creating a more connected experience, with Disney+ serving as the digital centerpiece.

In a statement, D'Amaro described Anand as bringing "a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI" and praised his "sharp instincts for what fans actually want." Anand said he looks forward to "building on the company's impressive technology capabilities to help Disney connect fans worldwide with its beloved stories and characters in new and innovative ways."
