Deutsche Telekom donates network automation platform to open source community

Linux Foundation Networking announced that Deutsche Telekom has contributed StratoWeave, an open source platform for automating network configuration and service management, to the LF Networking project portfolio. The platform joins as a Candidate project, according to details first reported by Linux Foundation Networking.

StratoWeave provides communications service providers with a vendor-agnostic alternative to proprietary automation systems. The platform uses model-driven, declarative automation to orchestrate services and devices across multi-vendor, multi-domain network environments.

Why it matters

As telecom networks become more distributed and AI-enabled, operators face mounting pressure to simplify operations while reducing dependence on single-vendor platforms. StratoWeave addresses a persistent industry challenge: how to automate complex infrastructure in ways that remain adaptable as requirements change. By joining LF Networking's neutral governance structure, the project creates opportunities for collaboration with existing initiatives like ONAP, Nephio, and Essedum to advance autonomous network operations.

How the platform works

StratoWeave's architecture centers on declarative "transforms" that allow operators to define the intended end state of a network or service. The platform then determines how to reach and maintain that state, rather than requiring operators to script step-by-step procedures.

The system supports layered service models, closed-loop automation, and reusable code for common operator services and device integrations. This design reduces the engineering effort required when introducing new features, devices, or vendors into production networks.

"StratoWeave was created to make robust network automation more accessible, more transparent, and more adaptable for operators," said Ian Farrer, Senior Architect for Group Technology at Deutsche Telekom AG. The project has deep roots in network and service automation, including optical transport networks.

Integration with LF Networking ecosystem

Arpit Joshipura, SVP and General Manager for Networking, Edge, and IoT at the Linux Foundation, said StratoWeave addresses "one of the most persistent challenges in telecom: how to automate complex networks and services in a way that is open, scalable, and adaptable."

The platform complements existing LF Networking projects by addressing orchestration across hybrid and multi-vendor infrastructure. Its addition strengthens end-to-end automation capabilities within the foundation's portfolio.

StratoWeave aims to help communications service providers reduce operational complexity, accelerate service delivery, and maintain greater control over their automation roadmap. The project targets environments where network architectures span cloud-native and distributed systems.

Deutsche Telekom's contribution provides the project with neutral governance and access to a broader community for maturing the platform and expanding integrations. Operators interested in the project can access code repositories, mailing lists, and community meetings through the LF Networking website.
