Cognition Eyes $40B Valuation After Hitting $1B Revenue Run Rate

The AI coding agent maker is in early talks for new funding just three months after closing a $1 billion round at $26 billion valuation.

Cognition, the company behind AI coding agent Devin, is in discussions with investors about a new funding round that could value the startup at $40 billion or more, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg.

The potential raise comes just three months after Cognition closed a $1 billion funding round in May that valued the company at $26 billion. The dramatic valuation increase hinges on the company achieving a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, the sources told Bloomberg.

Rapid Revenue Growth

When Cognition announced its May funding round, founder Scott Wu disclosed to TechCrunch that the company had reached a $492 million annualized revenue run rate. Enterprise customers were expanding their use of Devin by 50% month-over-month over the preceding six months, Wu said at the time.

If accurate, the company's trajectory from nearly $500 million to $1 billion in annualized revenue in roughly three months represents exceptional growth even by AI sector standards.

Why it matters

Cognition's potential $40 billion valuation would place it among the most valuable private AI companies globally, signaling investor confidence that enterprise AI coding tools represent a massive market opportunity. The rapid revenue scaling also suggests enterprises are moving beyond experimentation to production-scale deployments of AI agents that can autonomously handle software development tasks.

What Devin Actually Does

Devin positions itself not as a replacement for human programmers but as a tool for handling tedious maintenance work that developers typically avoid. The agent specializes in tasks like updating legacy software and migrating applications between platforms—work that's essential but time-consuming.

This focus on automation of grunt work rather than core development may explain Devin's traction with large enterprises. Cognition counts Mercedes-Benz, NASA, and Goldman Sachs among its customers, according to the company.

Wu, a competitive programmer with a reputation as a coding prodigy, has emphasized that Devin complements rather than replaces development teams. The agent handles long-tail tasks that consume developer time without requiring the creative problem-solving that defines much of software engineering.

The Broader AI Coding Market

Cognition's fundraising momentum comes as the AI coding assistant market heats up. Multiple startups and established tech companies are racing to build tools that can generate, review, and maintain code with varying degrees of autonomy.

The details of Cognition's discussions were first reported by Bloomberg. The company has not publicly commented on the potential new funding round.
