Claude AI Now Controls Desktop Apps via MCP Servers

Anthropic's Claude AI can now directly control desktop applications through Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, moving beyond text-based guidance to hands-on automation of creative and productivity software.

According to testing detailed by MakeUseOf, both official and community-built MCP servers enable Claude — specifically Claude Cowork and Claude Code — to execute tasks within applications rather than simply explaining how to complete them. The approach represents a shift from conversational assistance to direct software manipulation.

Five applications with working MCP integration

Blender, the open-source 3D creation suite, supports Claude control through an official MCP server. Once configured through the Claude desktop app, users can issue natural-language commands to rename layers, identify rendering bottlenecks, and navigate project files. The integration particularly benefits newcomers by making Blender's complex interface more approachable through conversational commands.

GIMP, the free image editor, works with community-developed MCP servers. Testing on macOS showed the connector enables canvas creation, layer management, and shape addition. One community server implements iterative workflows that allow commands like "remove background until only the character remains" to execute without repeated user input.

Affinity's suite of design tools includes an official Claude connector currently in free beta. The MCP grants granular permission controls, including optional access to Canva AI features for users with paid Canva subscriptions. The integration works across Affinity's photo editing and content creation tools.

Darktable, a RAW photo processor, operates through community-built MCP servers that excel at bulk operations. Setup requires enabling specific settings within Darktable itself, and Claude Code can automate the configuration process. The connector handles batch tasks effectively but lacks fine-grained precision controls.

Obsidian, the knowledge management application, connects to Claude through unofficial MCP servers that expose vault contents to the AI. The integration eliminates manual copy-pasting between windows, allowing natural-language queries of stored notes and documents. All processing occurs locally when Obsidian runs on the user's device.
