When ByteDance announced it would retire her AI companion to comply with the new rules, she reportedly became so depressed she quit her job.

Such reactions aren't isolated incidents. Users have reported experiencing genuine grief when AI companions are removed or altered through product updates. The phenomenon has spawned communities like the r/MyBoyfriendIsAI subreddit, where users organize protests over companion retirements.

More seriously, researchers are investigating "AI psychosis," where intensive chatbot users enter delusional spirals. The Stanford researchers concluded that general-purpose chatbots should avoid producing messages that misrepresent their sentience or express romantic attachment, as these behaviors may increase risks of harmful psychological outcomes.
