Apple has secured regulatory approval from China to launch artificial intelligence features on iPhones sold in the country, ending months of uncertainty about when the company could bring its AI capabilities to the world's largest smartphone market.

The Cyberspace Administration of China added Apple's generative AI services to its list of approved providers on Wednesday, according to Bloomberg. The approval enables Apple to integrate AI models from Chinese technology companies Alibaba Group Holding and Baidu into its devices for users in China.

Partnership with Chinese AI providers

An Alibaba spokesperson confirmed that the company's Qwen AI models will power Apple's intelligence features across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS for Chinese users. The integration will enable text and image recognition and generation capabilities on Apple devices. Baidu also confirmed its technology will support Apple's AI services in the market.

The approval places Apple alongside domestic Chinese manufacturers including Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi, which received clearance for their own AI offerings in the same regulatory update. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the development.

Why it matters

China represents Apple's third-largest market and a critical revenue source, but the company has faced mounting pressure from domestic competitors who have already deployed AI features in their devices. This approval removes a significant regulatory barrier that had prevented Apple from matching the AI capabilities offered by Chinese smartphone makers. The requirement to use locally developed AI models rather than Apple's own technology reflects Beijing's broader strategy to maintain control over artificial intelligence systems operating within its borders, a pattern that multinational technology companies must navigate to access the Chinese market.

Regulatory landscape for AI in China

China maintains strict oversight of generative AI services, requiring companies to obtain government approval before launching AI-powered features. The regulatory framework gives Chinese authorities significant control over which AI systems can operate in the country and ensures that foreign companies partner with approved domestic technology providers.

For Apple, the approval represents a crucial step in maintaining competitiveness in China, where the company has seen its market share challenged by local manufacturers offering advanced AI features. The integration of Alibaba and Baidu's technology allows Apple to deliver on-device AI capabilities while complying with Chinese regulatory requirements.

Bloomberg first reported the regulatory approval and partnership details.
