Caterpillar Hits $20B Quarter on AI Data Center Power Demand

The century-old equipment maker is leveraging mining automation expertise to supply generators and turbines for hyperscale computing infrastructure.

Caterpillar reported second-quarter revenue of $20.5 billion on August 4, marking the first time in the company's 100-year history it crossed the $20 billion threshold in a single quarter. The 24% jump from $16.6 billion a year earlier was driven primarily by power generation equipment for AI data centers, not the construction and mining machinery the Irving, Texas-based manufacturer is known for.

Power and Energy segment sales climbed 17% to $8.2 billion, while segment profit rose 30% to $2 billion. Within that business, power generation retail sales surged 72%, fueled by demand for large generator sets and turbines used in data center applications, CEO Joseph Creed told analysts.

The company's order backlog reached $72 billion in the quarter, with power and energy customers placing orders extending through 2030, according to details first reported by TechCrunch and Construction Dive.

Why it matters

The AI infrastructure bottleneck has shifted from semiconductors to power delivery and physical equipment. Caterpillar's ability to supply fast-ramping generators that can respond to variable computing loads in seven seconds addresses a critical constraint for hyperscalers building training clusters. Companies that can deliver reliable power on accelerated timelines—independent of grid upgrades—now hold strategic leverage in the AI supply chain.

Mining automation as data center blueprint

Caterpillar's competitive edge stems from decades deploying autonomous equipment in harsh industrial environments. More than 820 Cat autonomous trucks have hauled over 11 billion tonnes of material globally with zero reported injuries, with the first commercial deployment starting in Western Australia in 2013.

CTO Jaime Mineart told TechCrunch the technical challenge isn't the AI itself but integrating technology into customer workflows and jobsites. That operational discipline translates directly to data center deployments, where downtime carries steep financial penalties.

The company manages 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and maintains over 16 petabytes of structured operational data. Tools like Cat AI Assistant, which runs on Nvidia Jetson Thor chips, allow technicians to access repair procedures and parts information via voice commands while standing beside equipment—processing responses locally rather than through cloud round trips.

Contracted capacity through 2027

In January, Caterpillar announced a strategic alliance with American Intelligence & Power Corporation tied to AIP's Monarch Compute Campus. Under the agreement, AIP ordered 2 gigawatts of fast-response natural gas generator sets, with deliveries scheduled from September 2026 through August 2027.

The Cat G3516 platform can ramp from zero to full load in approximately seven seconds, meeting the rapid load-change requirements of AI training workloads. Creed also disclosed the company is restarting production of a 10-megawatt medium-speed gas reciprocating engine platform it had discontinued in 2022, with shipments beginning in Q4 and capacity scaling toward 1.5 gigawatts over 18 months.

Caterpillar is investing $100 million over five years to train its approximately 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics—recognizing that installation and field service capabilities matter as much as the technology itself when equipment operates in industrial settings.

Morgan Stanley analyst Angel Castillo upgraded Caterpillar stock and more than doubled his price target to $915 following the results, according to Bloomberg reporting on May 1.
