Apple Unveils Siri AI Overhaul at Tim Cook's Final WWDC
The iPhone maker promises a more conversational assistant while expanding child safety controls, as Cook prepares to hand leadership to John Ternus.

Apple Debuts Next-Generation Siri at Leadership Transition
Apple introduced a substantially redesigned digital assistant called Siri AI at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, addressing persistent criticism that the company has lagged competitors in artificial intelligence capabilities. The announcement came during what will be Tim Cook's final WWDC keynote as CEO before he steps down in September after 15 years leading the company.
The new Siri AI will function across Apple's product ecosystem and include a standalone app similar to offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. According to Apple, the assistant will draw on users' past interactions, image understanding, and broad knowledge to deliver more capable and conversational responses than the current version.
Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, emphasized the company's approach during his presentation. "We believe that truly helpful AI must be centered around you and your needs," Federighi said, noting that privacy considerations shaped every aspect of Siri AI's design. He also delivered an unusual public critique of "AI for the sake of AI without considering the people it's supposed to be able to serve."
A beta version will launch later this year for supported devices set to English, though notably not in the European Union. Apple stated that EU regulators rejected its proposed solutions for bringing Siri AI to the region while supporting other virtual assistants.
Enhanced Child Safety Controls
Alongside the AI announcement, Apple unveiled expanded trust and safety features as part of iOS 27. The company will extend its "ask" feature, requiring parental approval before children can communicate with unknown contacts. Apple's system will also automatically censor images flagged as potentially inappropriate for sexual or violent content when sent to known children's devices.
These measures come as Apple faces pressure from child safety advocates. A small group of protesters gathered outside the event Monday morning, with Sarah Gardner of the HEAT Initiative chaining herself to a tree to demand Apple remove "nudification" technology from its App Store and take down child sexual abuse material from iCloud. Gardner cited claims that Apple has generated at least $177 million from sexually explicit AI deepfake apps, though Apple maintains such applications violate its guidelines and that it proactively rejects and removes them.
Why it matters
Apple's AI push arrives at a critical juncture as the company attempts to close a perceived gap with Microsoft, Google, and other tech giants that moved faster on generative AI integration. The success of Siri AI will significantly influence whether Apple can maintain its premium market position as AI becomes central to consumer technology expectations. The timing of this launch during a CEO transition adds pressure on both Cook's legacy and incoming CEO John Ternus to demonstrate Apple can compete effectively in the AI era while maintaining its differentiation around privacy and integration.
Leadership Handoff
Cook received a standing ovation from thousands of Apple employees and developers at Apple Park. "Your imagination and ingenuity have inspired me for the last 15 years and I'm deeply grateful to have been on this journey with you," Cook told attendees, calling his tenure the "honour of a lifetime."
His replacement, John Ternus, did not speak during the main keynote but sat in the front row next to Cook at a media briefing. Ternus greeted attendees at a Sunday evening reception that analysts characterized as his introduction to the broader Apple community.
Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that Apple "had to address its shortcomings in AI, and WWDC provided some answers." However, he added that the company must now prove its privacy-focused approach "can translate into a meaningfully better everyday experience, not just parity with rivals."
