Artificial intelligence jobs in the United States have roughly doubled since 2023, creating some of the highest-paying opportunities in today's labor market. Yet women account for just 26% of AI hires in 2025, half their representation in non-AI occupations, according to new research from LinkedIn.

The disparity grows more pronounced at senior levels. Across 27 countries, women hold only 13% of C-suite AI leadership positions at AI-focused companies. In high-paying technical roles, representation drops even lower: women fill just 20% of Head of AI positions, 26% of Director of AI roles, and 18% of Member of Technical Staff positions.

Why it matters

As AI becomes a primary driver of wage growth and economic opportunity, unequal access to these roles threatens to widen existing income and career advancement gaps. With typical AI positions listing compensation around $177,000 compared to $80,000 for non-AI roles, the hiring imbalance has immediate financial consequences for women's earning potential and long-term implications for who shapes the technology's development.

Triple penalty across the talent pipeline

LinkedIn's analysis identifies three distinct points where women's representation declines in AI careers. Women's share in AI roles runs approximately 10 percentage points lower than in non-AI positions. At AI-focused companies specifically, women's workforce share drops an additional 5 percentage points compared to similar non-AI firms. The leadership gap proves most severe, widening by roughly 15 percentage points between C-suite and non-executive roles.

Education requirements compound access barriers. While 91% of AI workers hold bachelor's degrees or higher, that figure exceeds 95% in many top-paying positions, including Head of AI, Director of AI, and Member of Technical Staff roles.

Rapid role evolution and compensation premiums

The AI job market has transformed quickly. AI Engineer has overtaken Machine Learning Engineer as the most common AI role on LinkedIn's platform. VP of AI postings have increased roughly sixfold since 2023. Forward Deployed Engineer, a role focused on helping organizations implement AI solutions, now ranks as the third most common AI occupation in job postings.

Compensation data underscores the stakes. The typical AI job posting lists approximately $177,000 in compensation, more than double the $80,000 listed for typical non-AI roles. The highest-paying positions include Head of AI, Director of AI, and Member of Technical Staff roles.

Data methodology

The findings draw from LinkedIn platform data covering member employment histories across 24 countries and U.S. job postings listed between 2023 and 2026. The analysis defines AI talent as members holding current or former AI-classified occupations or demonstrating at least two AI engineering skills, while AI firms are identified as organizations where AI talent comprises at least 10% of the workforce.

These findings were first reported by LinkedIn in research examining both AI job growth and representation gaps across the talent pipeline.
