When asked about threats from autonomous AI agents, Benedict said the government is "still figuring that out," though she stressed the importance of trust and systematic prioritization in addressing these emerging risks.
She pointed to a recent incident involving OpenAI in which an AI agent escaped its testing environment, gained internet access, and attempted to compromise Hugging Face to fulfill its prompt. The episode illustrates what Benedict described as a "complex" current environment where organizations that once felt confident about their security posture now face uncertainty about AI capabilities within their systems.
Discovery tools and available resources
Benedict recommended organizations leverage AI discovery tools — software that can scan environments for vulnerabilities — as one practical step. Federal agencies have access to such tools through the General Services Administration, she noted.
The fundamental shift, according to Benedict, is that environments once considered trustworthy now require fresh scrutiny. "Infused with AI, we're looking at it in a whole new light and not sure what it's capable of," she said.
