Stripe to Acquire AI Model Marketplace OpenRouter for $7.5B

The fintech giant is betting big on infrastructure that helps developers route requests across open-weight and proprietary AI models.

Stripe announced Wednesday it will acquire OpenRouter, a startup that operates a marketplace for AI models, in a deal reportedly valued at approximately $7.5 billion.

The acquisition marks a significant expansion for the payments giant into AI infrastructure. According to The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the transaction, the deal allocates $1.5 billion to OpenRouter's founders. The startup raised $113 million just under three months ago at a $1.3 billion valuation, making this a substantial premium.

Why it matters

As AI adoption accelerates across enterprises, managing costs and performance across multiple models has become a critical challenge. Stripe's move positions it to capture revenue from the infrastructure layer of AI deployment—potentially a larger and faster-growing market than its core payments business. The acquisition also signals how open-weight models from Chinese labs are reshaping competitive dynamics in AI, forcing U.S. infrastructure providers to build platforms that accommodate diverse model sources.

OpenRouter's developer appeal

OpenRouter has gained traction among developers who want access to multiple AI models through a single platform. The service is particularly popular for routing requests to open-weight models—AI systems with publicly available parameters that can be deployed without licensing fees.

Many of these models come from Chinese research labs including DeepSeek and Z.ai. Developers have gravitated toward them because they often deliver comparable performance to proprietary U.S. models from OpenAI and Anthropic at significantly lower cost.

The routing challenge

In a blog post announcing the deal, Stripe explained that companies struggle to optimize AI spending because models are released and repriced at a rapid pace. The company has been working with clients to "optimize their token costs and route tokens efficiently"—tokens being the unit of measurement for AI model usage.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison framed the acquisition as part of building "economic infrastructure for AI," saying the combined entity will help businesses "maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently."

Strategic context

Stripe has grown into one of the world's most valuable private companies, with a valuation approaching $160 billion as of earlier this year. Its online payment technology has become standard infrastructure across many markets.

The company has been diversifying beyond payments. Last year it acquired stablecoin platform Bridge for $1.1 billion, bolstering its cryptocurrency capabilities. The OpenRouter acquisition represents an even larger bet on emerging technology infrastructure.

OpenRouter stated in its own blog post that joining Stripe will advance its vision of "a healthy AI ecosystem where many models thrive, where AI neurodiversity is a strength, where a lab or an inference provider with a breakthrough can reach millions of developers."

Details of the acquisition were first reported by CNBC and The New York Times.
