Starbucks pulled the plug on an AI-powered inventory system nine months after deploying it across every company-operated store in the United States, according to employees and the technology startup involved.

The issues extended far beyond one store. Baristas across the country reported the tool misidentifying milk types, confusing syrups, and in at least one instance, counting a trash can as food inventory.

Megan Queen, a store manager in Graham, Texas, faced a different challenge. Her café's unreliable internet connection caused the app to lose progress mid-count, forcing her team to revert to manual counting. The company treated those manual counts as if no count had been performed at all.
