SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung framed the investment as a strategic partnership between the U.S. and his company. "We will expand our investments and collaboration in the U.S., grow together, and become the most trusted partner in shaping the future of AI in America."

The groundbreaking event drew Indiana Governor Mike Braun, U.S. Senator Todd Young, Purdue University interim President Mitch Daniels, and South Korea's ambassador to the U.S., Kang Kyung-wha.

The agreement gives SK hynix access to Purdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center, which houses one of the largest academic cleanrooms in the country with 33,000 square feet of specialized laboratories.

The partnership will enable SK hynix to recruit engineering talent from across the Midwest and engage with emerging technologies developed through Purdue's research ecosystem. Purdue Research Foundation will support intellectual property management and technology commercialization efforts.

Purdue has positioned itself at the center of U.S. semiconductor workforce development, launching the nation's first comprehensive Semiconductor Degrees Program in 2022. More than 800 undergraduate and graduate students are currently pursuing semiconductor certificates, departmental concentrations, or participating in the SCALE program for defense sector workforce development.

Economic impact for Indiana

Governor Braun characterized the project as transformational for the state's economic development. "This project will usher in the next generation of American innovation, bring thousands of good-paying jobs to Indiana and supercharge regional economic development," Braun said.

The investment, originally announced in April 2024, represents one of the largest foreign direct investments in Indiana's history. Mark Lundstrom, dean of Purdue's College of Engineering and the university's chief semiconductor officer, described the facility as "the first step in the creation of a thriving, vibrant and growing semiconductor ecosystem in the Greater Lafayette, Indiana, region."
