Simple Car Tech Outperforms Flashy Features in Owner Satisfaction

JD Power finds hands-free driving systems and passenger screens rank among most problematic features while background automation earns top marks.

Background tech wins while advanced features disappoint

Automakers investing heavily in flashy technology features may be missing what drivers actually value, according to new research from JD Power. The firm's 2026 U.S. Tech Experience Index Study found that simple, unobtrusive technologies like smart ignition and climate control earn significantly higher satisfaction scores than advanced hands-free driving systems and passenger-side screens.

The study surveyed 68,084 owners of 2026 model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership, examining 40 different technologies across comfort, connectivity, driver assistance, electric vehicle, and smart vehicle categories.

Why it matters

The disconnect between automaker investment priorities and owner satisfaction suggests the industry may be overengineering solutions to problems drivers don't have. As manufacturers pour resources into Level 2+ autonomous features and multi-screen cabins, the data indicates that seamless background automation delivers better returns in customer satisfaction and reliability.

Smart ignition leads, hands-free systems lag

Smart ignition—which automatically starts and stops the vehicle based on driver behavior—scored highest in overall satisfaction while recording just 2.4 problems per 100 vehicles. Smart climate control and driver preference systems similarly earned strong marks, with owners appreciating functionality that requires minimal attention.

"The technology customers value most is often the technology they barely notice because it simply works," said Doron Hikry, Director of Customer Success at JD Power. He emphasized that automakers should prioritize technology that simplifies rather than complicates the driving experience.

Meanwhile, SAE Level 2+ systems that allow hands-free operation in certain conditions actually performed worse than standard Level 2 systems in execution and satisfaction, despite offering more functionality. While L2+ systems showed marginally fewer problems (13.8 per 100 vehicles versus 14.3 for L2), this technical improvement hasn't translated to higher owner satisfaction.

Passenger screens remain largely unused

Passenger-side screens, increasingly common in premium vehicles, recorded one of the highest problem rates at 21.3 per 100 vehicles. More tellingly, 35% of owners with passenger screens have never used them, and only 6% use them consistently. JD Power's separate Initial Quality Study also found that vehicles with passenger screens experienced higher infotainment problems overall.

Innovation leaders by segment

Cadillac led all brands in innovation with a score of 641 out of 1,000, followed by Genesis at 559 and BMW at 524. Among mass-market brands, Hyundai topped the rankings for the seventh consecutive year with a score of 524, tied with GMC and Kia at 470.

JD Power recognized several vehicles with Advanced Technology Awards, including the Cadillac Escalade and Toyota Tundra for camera rear-view mirrors, BMW X6 and Hyundai Palisade for phone-based digital keys, and Genesis GV70 and Hyundai Palisade for blind spot camera technology.

The findings were first reported by CBT News based on JD Power's 2026 Tech Experience Index Study, fielded from June 2025 through May 2026.
