Shield AI Acquires Aechelon Technology for Military Simulation

Shield AI has completed its acquisition of Aechelon Technology, a military simulation specialist whose visual environment systems are deployed across U.S. military branches and allied forces, the San Diego-based defense technology company announced June 22.

The deal follows Shield AI's close of a $2 billion strategic financing package in 2026, comprising $1.5 billion in Series G funding and $500 million in preferred equity financing. The combined raise valued Shield AI at $12.7 billion post-money.

Connecting simulation to autonomous flight

Aechelon brings high-fidelity simulation and physics-based sensor modeling technology that Shield AI plans to integrate directly with its Hivemind AI pilot software. Aechelon's simulation platforms currently support the Pentagon's Joint Simulation Environment and are used by the U.S. Coast Guard and international military customers.

According to Shield AI CEO Gary Steele, the acquisition creates a closed-loop development cycle connecting simulation, autonomy software, and field deployment. "Every action, by human and machine, must be tested and validated in simulation and fed back into a continuous, closed data loop," Steele said in the announcement.

The integration aims to accelerate development of manned-unmanned teaming capabilities, where human operators coordinate with autonomous aircraft in combat scenarios.

Why it matters

Military autonomous systems require extensive simulation testing before deployment, but most defense contractors license simulation technology from external vendors. By acquiring Aechelon outright, Shield AI gains direct control over the simulation environments where it trains and validates its AI pilots. This vertical integration could compress development timelines and enable tighter coupling between simulated training scenarios and real-world autonomous flight behavior—a potential competitive advantage as the Pentagon scales up collaborative combat aircraft programs.

Operational continuity

Aechelon will maintain its existing customer relationships and government program commitments while expanding collaboration with Shield AI's Hivemind division. Aechelon co-founder and CEO Ignacio Sanz-Pastor will report directly to Steele and retain responsibility for Aechelon's product and customer roadmap. Aechelon's workforce will join Shield AI's engineering and simulation teams.

Before the acquisition, Aechelon was a portfolio company of private equity firm Sagewind Capital. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Shield AI, founded in 2015, develops AI autonomy software and manufactures the V-BAT and X-BAT unmanned aircraft. The company operates facilities across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
