Schwab deploys purpose-built AI assistant across advisor platform

Schwab Advisor Services announced a partnership with Anthropic to bring Claude for Financial Advisors to more than 16,000 independent registered investment advisors using its custody platform. The AI assistant is designed to integrate directly with advisors' existing technology infrastructure rather than replace it.

The announcement came Monday at the FutureProof Festival in Huntington Beach, California, where the wealth management industry is examining what organizers call the "AI-Native RIA"—firms navigating where automation fits and where human judgment remains essential.

Claude for Financial Advisors connects with the tools advisors already use daily, including CRM systems, portfolio reporting platforms, financial planning software, estate planning applications, and custody systems. The integration aims to streamline workflows from meeting preparation through client follow-up, according to details first reported by 401(k) Specialist.

Why it matters

Schwab's move represents the first major custodian to embed enterprise AI directly into the RIA workflow at scale. Rather than forcing advisors to adopt standalone AI tools, the integration works across their existing tech stacks—potentially accelerating AI adoption in an industry where regulatory concerns and data security have slowed implementation. For the 16,000-plus firms Schwab serves, this could shift competitive dynamics around service delivery and operational efficiency.

Orchestrating across the tech stack

Peter Nolan, head of asset and wealth management at Anthropic, described Claude for Financial Advisors as an orchestrator designed to work end-to-end across advisor technology. "Our goal is to bring the benefits of AI to as many families as possible, and a direct path runs through the advisors they already trust," Nolan said during a FutureProof panel.

The system includes audit logs that allow administrators to review AI actions, addressing compliance and oversight requirements that have been barriers to AI adoption in wealth management.

Jon Beatty, head of Schwab Advisor Services, framed the partnership as enabling advisors to differentiate through enhanced client service. "Independent advisors have always succeeded on the strength of their relationships, and relationships are built on advice, service and client experiences that stand apart," Beatty said. "AI is exponentially powering the ability of advisors to stand apart in this way, even more so if it is integrated with the proprietary workflows and tech stacks advisors have already built."

Practical applications in daily workflow

The AI assistant handles tasks that typically pull advisors away from client interaction: preparing for meetings by surfacing relevant account changes, updating financial plans based on new data, performing portfolio analytics, and drafting follow-up communications for advisor review.

Alison Dooher, head of AI for Schwab Advisor Services, emphasized the human-centric design. "For RIAs, technology has always been about delivering exceptional service and creating more opportunities to connect on a human level," Dooher said. "AI pushes that thinking forward. It takes on more of the work that pulls advisors away from their clients, so they can spend their time where it counts."

Schwab is currently the only RIA custodian offering integration with Claude through this purpose-built financial advisor solution. Anthropic will present at Schwab's IMPACT conference in Boston from October 27-29, where advisors can learn implementation details. The AI company is also hosting a webinar on September 18 walking firms through how to get started with the platform.
