Salesforce Wins IL5 Clearance for AI Agents in Defense Ops

Salesforce has secured Defense Department authorization to deploy its Agentforce 360 agentic AI platform at Impact Level 5, clearing the way for autonomous AI agents to handle Controlled Unclassified Information and unclassified National Security Systems data across military operations.

The IL5 designation represents the highest authorization for unclassified defense cloud environments, positioning Salesforce as the first major commercial software company to bring a production-ready agentic platform from commercial markets into national security settings, according to company executives.

Army Human Resources Command leads adoption

Army Human Resources Command will serve as the first Defense Department component to deploy Agentforce 360 in the newly authorized IL5 environment. The command manages more than 55 million conversations monthly serving soldiers, civilians, spouses and veterans — workload that Salesforce estimates includes over 1,500 daily cases suitable for automated summarization.

The deployment aims to free frontline analysts from manual review tasks while maintaining service quality through AI agents that can operate autonomously or assist human operators. This work proceeds under a 10-year, $5.6 billion indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract Salesforce announced with the Army in January.

Salesforce's IL5 authorization signals a strategic shift for the enterprise software giant, which is positioning itself as a prime contractor rather than working exclusively through systems integrators as it has historically. The move reflects growing Pentagon interest in commercial AI platforms that can unify fragmented military data systems and automate routine tasks at scale. With the U.S. government representing Salesforce's largest single customer globally, the company's Missionforce business unit — launched in 2025 as a specialized national security division — represents a bet that agentic AI will become infrastructure for defense operations.

Technical architecture and constraints

The IL5-compliant platform runs on Amazon Web Services' GovCloud, described as a physically and logically isolated region operated exclusively by U.S. personnel. Salesforce identified AWS and Google as its primary infrastructure partners for defense work.

The company also operates a fully air-gapped, top-secret environment for Intelligence Community applications, though the IL5 authorization covers the broader Agentforce 360 platform for Defense Department use.

Notably, Salesforce executives indicated the company had to attest that generative AI capabilities from Anthropic were disabled to achieve IL5 authorization. The Pentagon is currently engaged in a legal dispute with Anthropic regarding military use of its Claude AI model. Salesforce officials said the platform remains model-agnostic with a policy-driven toggle that could enable Anthropic integration if Defense Department policy changes.

Prime contractor ambitions

Kendall Collins, CEO of Salesforce's Missionforce unit and Government Cloud division, characterized Missionforce as a "startup inside a 27-year-old company" focused on Defense Department, Intelligence Community and federal agency missions. National security represents one of Salesforce's fastest-growing business areas, according to Collins.

Retired Maj. Gen. Allan Day, now a vice president at Salesforce, emphasized that built-in security guardrails enable rather than constrain innovation: "Guardrails, to me, built-in means I can accelerate. It's not a speed bump."
