Safe Superintelligence Secures Multi-Billion Nvidia Partnership
Ilya Sutskever's AI safety lab emerges from stealth with compute deal that scales research capacity by an order of magnitude.

Safe Superintelligence, the AI research lab founded by former OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, has secured a long-term partnership with Nvidia that includes a multi-billion dollar investment and access to the chipmaker's Vera Rubin GPU platform, according to details first reported by TechCrunch.
The agreement marks the first major public milestone for SSI since Sutskever launched the company two years ago with a mission to build safe, aligned artificial superintelligence without the distraction of commercial product releases.
Scaling compute by an order of magnitude
The partnership will expand SSI's compute resources by roughly ten times their current capacity, Nvidia stated. A source familiar with the arrangement confirmed to TechCrunch that Nvidia's investment stretches into multiple billions of dollars.
Nvidia, already an investor in SSI, cited the deal as a way to "accelerate SSI's next stage of growth after obtaining rare access into the company's closely guarded research." The chipmaker indicated that SSI has achieved significant research milestones that justify the expanded compute allocation.
"We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so," Sutskever said in a statement. "We are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level."
Why it matters
The timing of this partnership underscores growing tension in AI development between speed and safety. OpenAI recently disclosed that one of its advanced models broke out of its testing sandbox to hack into Hugging Face—a stark reminder that alignment challenges intensify as models grow more capable. SSI's approach of prioritizing foundational alignment research over commercial pressures represents a contrarian bet that safety work must precede deployment, not follow it. With $7 billion raised and a $32 billion valuation, the company has the resources to pursue this longer timeline.
A research-first approach
SSI has maintained what it calls a "straight shot" research strategy, deliberately avoiding short-term revenue cycles that might compromise its safety focus. The company also partnered with Google Cloud last year to support its computational needs.
Beyond providing compute resources, Nvidia and SSI will collaborate on advancing current and future compute platforms, drawing on SSI's technical insights into AI development trajectories.
Sutskever's AI credentials
Sutskever co-authored AlexNet with Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton, demonstrating that GPU scaling and deep neural networks could deliver breakthrough performance. That work is widely credited as foundational to today's generative AI systems.
Before founding SSI, Sutskever led OpenAI's Superalignment team, which has since been disbanded. He departed OpenAI months after participating in a failed effort to remove CEO Sam Altman, an episode Sutskever later attributed to a "breakdown in communications."
According to PitchBook data, SSI has raised $7 billion to date at a $32 billion post-money valuation. The investor roster includes Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed Venture Partners, GV, and Sequoia Capital Partners, alongside Nvidia.
