Riot Platforms Signs $9B Anthropic Deal, Pivots to AI Hosting
The bitcoin miner will lease 191 megawatts of Texas power capacity to the AI company in a 20-year agreement that marks a broader industry shift.

Bitcoin Miner Becomes AI Landlord
Riot Platforms has secured a $9 billion agreement to provide computing infrastructure to Anthropic over 20 years, CNBC's David Faber confirmed. The deal grants the AI company access to 191 megawatts of power capacity at Riot's Rockdale, Texas campus, transforming the bitcoin miner into an AI infrastructure provider.
The agreement is projected to generate $9.1 billion in revenue across its initial term, with potential to reach $16.1 billion if Anthropic exercises two optional five-year extensions. Combined with an existing arrangement with Advanced Micro Devices, Riot now operates what Compass Point analyst Michael Donovan described as a "two-tenant campus carrying $9.8 [billion] of contracted data center revenue."
Shares of Riot initially jumped more than 20 percent on the news before retracing most of the gain.
Why it matters
The Riot-Anthropic deal illustrates how publicly traded bitcoin miners are repositioning themselves as the crypto market struggles and AI demand explodes. These companies control increasingly scarce assets — grid-connected power, data center facilities, and energy contracts — that AI companies desperately need but can't easily replicate. For investors, this shift offers exposure to AI infrastructure growth without betting on which specific models or applications will dominate, since all AI workloads require the same fundamental resources.
Industry-Wide Transformation
The pivot from cryptocurrency mining to AI infrastructure began taking shape in 2022 during the previous crypto downturn. Bitcoin mining profitability has been squeezed by lower prices, increased competition, and the quadrennial halving event that reduces mining rewards. When bitcoin's price falls below the cost to mine it — including electricity, hardware, and operational expenses — miners face losses that force strategic shifts.
While companies like Cipher Mining, Hut 8, and Terawulf have already adopted hybrid models, Riot had remained among the pure-play miners alongside Mara Holdings and CleanSpark. This Anthropic agreement signals that even the sector's holdouts are embracing the infrastructure opportunity.
Power Scarcity Drives Value
The strategic value of existing power capacity may increase as Texas regulators tighten oversight. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has begun scrutinizing new power projects more carefully, according to Donovan, potentially slowing speculative developments still in the approval pipeline.
"ERCOT's increased scrutiny may slow speculative projects still navigating the queue, but it does not reduce tenant demand for large blocks of near-term power," Donovan wrote in a Tuesday note. "If anything, the scarcity of greenlit capacity should increase its strategic value."
The analyst maintained a Buy rating on Riot shares with a $29 price target.
