Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora told CNBC that roughly $1 trillion worth of cybersecurity infrastructure deployed over the past decade is inadequate for defending against AI-powered threats that operate at machine speed.

"Nothing that was deployed seven or 10 years ago is prepared or ready to handle AI at machine speed," Arora said during an appearance on Mad Money following the company's fiscal fourth quarter earnings report. "You have to rethink your cyber architecture."

The assessment comes as Palo Alto beat quarterly estimates and issued strong guidance, suggesting enterprises are already acting on the need to upgrade. Arora described approximately $1 trillion in "global cybersecurity debt" that must be modernized to counter automated threats that exploit vulnerabilities instantaneously.

The reversal in market sentiment has been dramatic. Arora noted that nine months ago, investors had "convicted" cybersecurity vendors of being disrupted by AI. Palo Alto shares were down year-to-date through early April 2026, but have since surged 113% as the narrative shifted.

Arora credited the launch of Anthropic's Mythos model earlier this year as a turning point. The model demonstrated how easily AI could be weaponized to find and exploit software vulnerabilities, prompting enterprises to take defensive modernization seriously. "I've been trying for eight years to tell customers they're not ready, and [Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei] did it in one event, just by launching Mythos," Arora said.

Palo Alto's response

The company introduced its Frontier AI Critical Defense Program in August, which uses advanced AI models to test customer defenses, identify gaps, and guide infrastructure upgrades. Arora said Palo Alto has held conversations with roughly 2,000 companies about the initiative.

While he cautioned that spending won't materialize immediately, Arora argued that AI has fundamentally extended the growth runway for the entire cybersecurity sector. "This changes the long-term growth rate and duration of cybersecurity, not just for Palo Alto, but as an industry," he said.

The CEO emphasized that successful AI deployment depends on getting security right first. "You cannot deploy AI successfully if you don't get cybersecurity right," he said.
