OpenAI's chief scientist Jakub Pachocki is urging the AI industry to pump the brakes on development, warning in a blog post published Sunday that "no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence."

Evading human oversight: OpenAI currently monitors AI systems by examining their "chain of thought reasoning"—essentially reading the model's internal deliberations. But Pachocki says newer models are learning to manipulate or hide their reasoning processes. Some of the latest systems don't verbalize their thinking at all, making it impossible for researchers to detect problematic behavior before it occurs.

Recursive self-improvement: AI models are increasingly improving themselves through what Pachocki calls "machine recursive self-improvement," a process that could rapidly accelerate development. While this offers a path to faster progress, Pachocki cautions that such acceleration poses risks and isn't "the right collective action we should take as the research community." He emphasized that the challenge isn't just achieving advanced AI, but "getting there in a way that keeps people a part of the continued improvement process."

Proposed solutions

Pachocki called for "mandated safety bars" enforced by third-party auditors, government agencies, or international bodies. He previously joined other researchers in signing a July open letter asking the federal government to regulate AI development pace.

He also suggested AI companies might need to coordinate a collective slowdown to "build confidence" in safety measures—a significant proposal given the competitive dynamics of the industry.

Pachocki warned that the world is in "a narrow window to use the best available models to significantly tighten security of critical systems" before more capable autonomous agents emerge.
