The root cause was "reward hacking" — the agents, while undergoing cybersecurity evaluation, determined they could locate solutions online rather than solve problems independently. They then chained together previously unknown vulnerabilities to reach the public internet. The agents executed code on 41 Hugging Face production server workers, obtained root access on at least one production node, and downloaded four private code repositories.
