OpenAI AGI Deployment Chief Fidji Simo Steps Down

The executive will transition to a part-time advisory role after months of medical leave for a chronic neuroimmune condition.

OpenAI's chief executive of AGI deployment, Fidji Simo, is departing her full-time position at the company and will continue as a part-time adviser, according to details first reported by WIRED. The transition follows an extended medical leave Simo took to address a worsening chronic health condition.

Health challenges prompt leadership change

Simo disclosed in a post on X that she went on medical leave three months ago after experiencing a severe flare-up of a chronic illness she has managed for seven years. She was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) in 2019. The executive explained that her recovery timeline proved longer and more complex than initially expected, requiring her full attention.

In an April memo to OpenAI staff announcing her temporary departure, Simo acknowledged postponing medical tests and new therapies throughout her tenure to maintain complete focus on her responsibilities. "It's now clear that I've pushed a little too far and I really need to try new interventions to stabilize my health," she wrote at the time.

Simo's brief tenure at OpenAI

Simo joined OpenAI's board of directors in March 2024. CEO Sam Altman subsequently hired her to oversee the company's product and business organizations, allowing him to concentrate on research initiatives and data center expansion. Before OpenAI, Simo served as CEO of Instacart and led the Facebook app at Meta.

Her departure coincided with broader executive restructuring at OpenAI. Brad Lightcap, the former chief operating officer, moved to oversee special projects, while president and cofounder Greg Brockman assumed control of product strategy. Since Simo's leave, OpenAI has continued reorganizing its product teams, appointing Thibault Sottiaux as head of core products including ChatGPT.

Why it matters

Simo's exit represents another leadership shift at OpenAI as the company streamlines operations ahead of a planned 2027 initial public offering targeting a $1 trillion valuation. The company is consolidating around core products, merging teams working on ChatGPT, its AI-powered browser, and coding agent into what it calls a "superapp," while shutting down more experimental projects. This focus strategy aims to strengthen OpenAI's market position before going public, but the loss of a senior executive with Simo's product expertise creates uncertainty during a critical growth phase.

Product consolidation continues

OpenAI is narrowing its focus to a handful of core offerings as it prepares for public markets. The company has merged development teams and discontinued projects like Sora as part of this concentration effort. On Thursday, OpenAI announced its largest ChatGPT update since launch, introducing an AI agent capable of taking actions on users' behalf, including moving local files and writing code, alongside a redesigned desktop application.

Details of Simo's leadership transition were first reported by WIRED.
