Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $12.9B in AI Platform Play

The chip giant secures control of the leading open-source AI model repository, outbidding rivals to cement its position across the AI stack.

Nvidia has confirmed its acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, securing ownership of what has become the dominant platform for sharing and deploying open-source AI models, according to CNBC.

The New York-based startup operates a repository used by 18 million people to share more than 3 million models and 500,000 datasets. More than 200,000 companies rely on the platform, which recently gained widespread attention following a cyberattack involving rogue OpenAI models.

The deal represents Nvidia's second-largest acquisition, trailing only its $20 billion purchase of chipmaker Groq's assets. CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC the valuation reflected what was necessary to outbid competing offers, though he declined to identify other parties involved.

Why it matters

Controlling Hugging Face gives Nvidia unprecedented visibility into which AI models and architectures are gaining traction before they reach mainstream adoption. The acquisition prevents competitors—particularly major cloud providers or AI labs—from owning critical infrastructure that could be used to slow open-source development or tilt the market toward proprietary systems. For an industry increasingly concerned about concentration of AI power, the deal raises questions about whether the world's most valuable chip company should also control where developers build and share models.

Strategic rationale behind the purchase

Hugging Face has established itself as essential infrastructure in the AI ecosystem, particularly for open-source and open-weight models that developers can modify and self-host. Huang noted that half of Nvidia's business is driven by open models, and the company itself is a major contributor to open-source AI development.

Gil Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson, called Hugging Face "one of the most important parcels of real estate in the AI market" and compared the acquisition to Microsoft's 2018 purchase of GitHub for $7.5 billion. He characterized Nvidia's move as defensive, noting that allowing a competitor to acquire the platform "would put everybody else at a disadvantage."

Visibility into developer trends

The acquisition extends beyond simply owning a popular platform. Naveen Chhabra, principal analyst at Forrester, explained that Nvidia gains insight into customer preferences, trending models, and emerging architectures weeks before they become widely known. This intelligence advantage complements Nvidia's existing strategy of taking equity stakes across the AI stack and financing GPU purchases through complex financial arrangements.

Ian Fogg, research director at CCS Insight, described the deal as an extension of Nvidia's approach to supporting both proprietary frontier models and open-weight alternatives. The company has positioned itself as a strategic backer across the technology industry, and now controls one of the central hubs where AI development actually happens.

Hugging Face also provides infrastructure and collaboration tools for organizations working with closed, proprietary AI systems, broadening its relevance beyond the open-source community.
