NSF launches $100M regional AI infrastructure hub program

New initiative will expand compute access for researchers through state partnerships while building workforce capacity for AI-enabled science.

The National Science Foundation has announced a $100 million program to establish State and Regional AI Infrastructure Hubs across the United States, aiming to democratize access to advanced computing resources for scientific research.

The initiative will support up to 10 regional hubs, each serving one state or multi-state region. These hubs will operate as flexible consortia bringing together research institutions, state and local governments, philanthropic organizations, and private sector partners to build and operate cutting-edge AI compute infrastructure.

NSF's investment will specifically fund consortium coordination, AI infrastructure workforce development, and faculty training programs. The goal is to ensure researchers, students, and educators can effectively leverage compute resources for scientific discovery rather than simply providing hardware access.

Addressing uneven infrastructure access

The program responds to a persistent challenge in American research: highly uneven distribution of AI infrastructure across the country. As AI transforms scientific discovery across disciplines, maintaining U.S. research leadership requires that scientists and students nationwide can access cutting-edge tools, not just those at well-resourced institutions.

"Artificial intelligence is transforming how we conduct research, accelerate scientific discovery and address complex challenges across disciplines," said Brian Stone, performing the duties of NSF director. The hubs will "empower researchers, students and communities to advance AI-enabled science and drive the next generation of scientific breakthroughs."

Aligned with national science policy

The program implements recommendations from "Science: A New Golden Age," a July 2026 report from White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios. That report called for expanding world-class R&D infrastructure to support AI-enabled scientific discovery.

"Regional partners who share in the benefits of discovery will pool their resources to unlock compute at a scale that no individual stakeholder, and no federal program, could achieve alone," Kratsios said.

The hubs will integrate with national resources including the NSF-led National AI Research Resource, enabling resource sharing beyond local capacity. Each hub will also partner with regional industry to align workforce development with local job market needs.

Private sector participation

Several technology companies and philanthropic organizations have indicated intent to support program participants, including NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Dell Technologies, Hangar, and the Secunda Innovation Fund. NSF has invited additional organizations to contribute.

Why it matters

Concentrating advanced AI infrastructure at a handful of elite institutions creates a two-tier research ecosystem that wastes talent and limits scientific progress. By pooling resources across state and regional partnerships, this model could deliver compute capacity that individual institutions or federal programs alone cannot match—while ensuring the workforce development needed to actually use these tools effectively. The approach tests whether distributed infrastructure investment can compete with centralized facilities in advancing frontier science.
