The cost differential is stark. One million output tokens—approximately 750,000 words—costs $50 using Anthropic's Fable model. The same volume costs $0.87 with DeepSeek-V4-Pro, $4.40 with Z.ai GLM-5.2, and $15 with Kimi K3.

Major companies are responding to these economics. Airbnb uses Alibaba's Qwen for customer service. Cursor built its Composer 2 coding model on Moonshot's Kimi foundation. Coinbase cut AI spending in half by directing employees toward Kimi and GLM models, according to CEO Brian Armstrong. DoorDash delegates coding tasks to Kimi for what CTO Andy Fang describes as "better quality [at] cheaper cost."

Several factors enable Chinese pricing advantages. Power costs less in China due to infrastructure investments. Chinese firms accept thinner profit margins to capture market share. Export controls paradoxically forced efficiency innovations. Most Chinese companies release models under permissive open-source licenses, eliminating R&D cost recovery from the pricing equation.

Geopolitical Tensions Rising

Congress is now investigating American companies' use of Chinese AI models, citing security concerns and competitive threats. Brief U.S. restrictions on Anthropic's latest models for foreign users backfired, according to analysts, by accelerating demand for sovereign AI solutions that governments can control domestically.

Z.ai explicitly positioned its GLM-5.2 release as a response to U.S. policy uncertainty, stating that "frontier intelligence should not belong to only a few people, nor be subject to withdrawal by a handful of rules at any moment." Chinese President Xi Jinping reinforced this message at a July AI conference, arguing that AI "should not be a solo performance by any one country, but a symphony of global cooperation."
