Record funding for European AI challenger

Mistral AI has closed a €3 billion Series D funding round at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion, marking the largest equity raise ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the investment, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing backer PSG Equity, according to an announcement from the Paris-based company.

The three-year-old startup now operates across 20 countries and serves more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC, for mission-critical AI deployments.

Full-stack sovereignty as competitive edge

Mistral positions itself as the only AI company building what it calls a complete sovereign stack: open-weight models, the infrastructure and compute capacity to run them, and production-ready products. This approach allows enterprises and governments to deploy advanced AI without ceding control over data, customization, or vendor dependencies.

The company defines sovereignty across four dimensions: data that remains within organizational boundaries, models that are controllable and customizable, private and predictable compute resources, and fully auditable production systems. This architecture enables organizations to implement state-of-the-art AI while keeping proprietary data, workflows, and institutional knowledge internal.

Existing backers a16z, ASML, Belfius, BNP Paribas CIB, Bpifrance, Carmignac, DST Global, Eurazeo, General Catalyst, Headline, Hillspire, Index Ventures, Korelya Capital, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, Phoenix Court's Solar fund (home to LocalGlobe, Latitude and Solar), and Salesforce Ventures also participated.

Mistral's Series C was led by ASML, and the Series D by Samsung Electronics, bringing together investors from Europe, Asia, and North America. The capital will fund expanded frontier research, increased compute capacity for training powerful models, infrastructure scaling, and accelerated commercial growth internationally.
