Mistral AI Raises $3.5B at $24B Valuation in Record European Round

The Paris-based AI startup nearly doubled its valuation in a year, cementing its position as Europe's most valuable foundation model company.

Paris-based Mistral AI has closed a $3.5 billion Series D funding round at a valuation exceeding $24 billion, nearly doubling its worth from a year earlier and setting a new benchmark for European artificial intelligence ventures.

Samsung Electronics led the investment, joined by co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing backer PSG Equity. The financing arrives almost exactly one year after Mistral's $2 billion Series C, which valued the company at $13.7 billion. Since its founding in 2023, Mistral has now raised $7.5 billion total.

Europe's AI champion

The new funding solidifies Mistral's standing as Europe's most highly valued foundation model company. Globally, only seven private frontier labs carry valuations above $20 billion—eight if counting China's ByteDance, which also develops its own models. The remainder are concentrated in the United States and China, making Mistral an outlier in the geography of AI development.

Mistral develops AI models for text generation, code writing, and document analysis, competing directly with U.S. companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The company differentiates itself by offering models that enterprises can customize and operate on their own infrastructure rather than depending exclusively on third-party cloud providers—a pitch that emphasizes control and data sovereignty.

The startup currently operates across 20 countries and counts more than 125 global enterprises as customers, including Airbus, ASML, BMW, and HSBC. According to the company, the new capital will fund expanded frontier research, infrastructure buildout, and accelerated commercial growth internationally.

Why it matters

Mistral's raise signals a maturation of Europe's venture ecosystem, particularly in AI infrastructure where the continent has historically lagged behind Silicon Valley and China. The deal demonstrates that European startups can command Silicon Valley-scale valuations when they combine technical differentiation with enterprise traction. For enterprises concerned about data sovereignty and vendor lock-in, Mistral's growth validates demand for alternatives to U.S. hyperscaler-dependent AI platforms.

European venture momentum builds

The Mistral round caps a strong year for European venture activity. In the second quarter of 2026, Europe posted its strongest quarter in four years for venture funding, with startups raising $24 billion—up roughly one-third from the previous quarter and two-thirds higher than the $14.4 billion raised in the second quarter of 2025.

Several other substantial European AI deals closed this year. London-based Isomorphic Labs, a Google spinoff, raised a $2.1 billion Series B in May led by Thrive Capital. AI data center provider Nscale secured a $2 billion Series C at a $14.6 billion valuation in March, co-led by 8090 Industries and Aker, and has since added several billion in debt financing.

Mistral's previous $2 billion Series C represented the largest venture round ever raised by a European AI company at the time. This latest financing eclipses that record.
