Mistral AI raises $3.5B at $23B valuation in record European round

Samsung leads Series D as French startup doubles down on European data center ownership to challenge U.S. and Chinese AI dominance.

Mistral AI closed a €3 billion ($3.5 billion) Series D funding round on Tuesday, reaching a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion ($23 billion) and marking the largest equity raise ever completed by a European technology company, according to the Paris-based AI startup.

Samsung Electronics led the round alongside Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and returning investor PSG Equity. New backers include Advent, BlackRock-managed funds, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Previous investors a16z, ASML, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures also participated.

Why it matters

Mistral's massive raise and infrastructure strategy represent Europe's most ambitious challenge yet to U.S. and Chinese AI hegemony. By owning rather than renting compute capacity, the company is betting that data sovereignty concerns and regulatory pressures will drive enterprise customers toward European alternatives—a wager that could reshape where AI workloads run globally.

Capital earmarked for data center ownership

CEO Arthur Mensch told CNBC the company plans to build and own data centers rather than rely indefinitely on rented computing capacity. "Long term, the plan is to fully rely on capacity that we are building ourselves, and so that means that the amount of compute that we own is going to grow around 100% in the next five years," Mensch said. The capital will also fund development of "bigger and faster models."

Mistral is on track to exceed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue before year-end, Mensch said, adding that the funding "is also accelerating and enabling further growth down the line in 2027."

Rapid infrastructure buildout underway

The Series D follows an $830 million debt raise earlier this year that funded a new data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel, outside Paris, equipped with 13,800 Nvidia GB300 GPUs. A second facility carrying a €1.2 billion price tag is under construction in Sweden. Mistral is targeting 200 megawatts of combined European capacity by the end of 2027.

The company has also struck a strategic partnership with Microsoft, under which Microsoft will use capacity from Mistral's European data centers to serve cloud and AI customers. Mistral's models are integrated into Microsoft Foundry and Copilot Studio.

European positioning and customer base

Mistral operates across 20 countries and counts more than 125 enterprise customers, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. The company markets itself as an independent, European-rooted alternative in a market otherwise dominated by American and Chinese players. It promotes open-weight models and what it calls "sovereign AI"—an architecture designed to keep data, infrastructure, and deployment decisions under customer control.

The new valuation nearly doubles the €11.7 billion figure from Mistral's Series C round a year ago, which was led by ASML.

Details of the funding were first reported by CNBC.
