Microsoft Quantum Chief Dismisses Peer Review Concerns

Microsoft's quantum computing division is doubling down on a controversial research strategy, with its leader openly dismissing calls from the scientific community for greater transparency and peer review.
Zulfi Alam, Microsoft's corporate vice president of quantum, told WIRED he has no interest in sharing the raw data behind the company's claimed breakthrough in creating Majorana quasiparticles—exotic quantum states theorized nearly 90 years ago that could form the basis of highly stable quantum bits. When asked why Microsoft won't release granular data that scientists have requested, Alam responded bluntly: "Why should I?"
A troubled research history
Microsoft's Majorana-based approach to quantum computing has faced persistent scrutiny. The company retracted a 2021 Nature paper claiming evidence of Majorana particles after independent physicists identified problems with the data analysis. Last year's announcement that the team had effectively split an electron into Majorana quasiparticles met immediate skepticism, with scientists noting that the published data couldn't rule out alternative physical explanations for the observed signals, according to WIRED.
The controversy intensified in June when Microsoft announced a qubit 1,000 times more reliable than previous versions, developed using the company's scientific discovery AI agent. Yet the underlying Majorana research remains unverified by independent experts.
Commercial urgency versus scientific rigor
Alam defended the decision to withhold data by citing commercial sensitivity and the slow pace of traditional academic publishing. He noted that Microsoft's June Nature paper described work completed two years earlier. "The world has changed in two years, so this notion of having peer reviews and publications doesn't work in this fast-moving world right now," Alam said, adding that he finds "this paper thing is kind of boring now."
That stance has drawn sharp criticism from other quantum computing researchers. Trevor Lanting, chief development officer at D-Wave Quantum, told WIRED that independent evaluation is "part of the healthy process of really establishing the science and the technical foundation for the technology." When a company claims it doesn't have time for peer review, Lanting said, "I would read that as 'our results aren't strong enough to stand up to that scrutiny.'"

Microsoft's approach represents a fundamental tension in quantum computing development: the pressure to achieve commercial breakthroughs quickly versus the scientific community's need for reproducible, verifiable results.
