Microsoft has launched a dedicated operating unit that will embed thousands of its own engineers inside enterprise customer organizations to design and deploy AI systems, committing $2.5 billion and 6,000 employees to the effort.
The new Microsoft Frontier Company consolidates industry specialists, engineers, and AI professionals from existing teams, with plans to expand through both internal transfers and external hiring, according to details first reported by Quartz. Rodrigo Kede Lima, previously head of Microsoft's Asia business, will lead the unit as president.

The competitive landscape
Microsoft's move follows a wave of similar commitments from rivals. According to GeekWire, both Anthropic and OpenAI launched competing programs in May to station engineers at enterprise clients. Just two days before Microsoft's announcement, Amazon pledged $1 billion toward its own comparable initiative, making forward deployment a defining battleground in enterprise AI.
Judson Althoff, chief executive of Microsoft's commercial business, told CNBC that customers face genuine confusion about AI adoption strategy. "Do they snap to one model from OpenAI or one model from Anthropic, or a family of models?" Althoff said. "Do they take it from a technology first mindset? How do they look at their existing business processes and operations?"
Key guarantees
Microsoft is making two central promises to differentiate its approach. First, proprietary client data and institutional knowledge will remain entirely under customer control and will not feed into AI training pipelines that could benefit competitors. Second, customers retain freedom to deploy models from any provider—whether OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft itself, or open-source alternatives—rather than being locked into a single option.
Early customers include LSEG, Land O'Lakes, Unilever, and Novo Nordisk. Microsoft said it will work with consulting partners including Accenture, Capgemini, EY, KPMG, and PwC to extend the initiative globally.
Investor pressure backdrop
The announcement comes as Microsoft faces mounting investor scrutiny over AI spending. Microsoft stock has fallen more than 20% this year, its worst start since 2000, as capital expenditures climbed 63% in the most recent quarter to $38 billion while free cash flow contracted. Analysts have noted investor frustration with AI buildout costs that have not yet produced visible revenue growth.
For scale context, Microsoft's enterprise and partner services segment generated roughly $2.1 billion during the March quarter, up about 2.5% year-over-year.
