Meta Platforms has launched Muse Image, a new artificial intelligence model capable of generating and editing images, marking the first major release since the company invested billions to reconstruct its AI research division under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang one year ago.
The model became available Tuesday within the Meta AI chatbot and will integrate across the company's social platforms, including Instagram and WhatsApp, according to a company blog post first reported by Bloomberg. Users can create images from text descriptions or modify existing pictures. Meta plans to extend access to advertisers for creating marketing content.
One distinctive feature allows users to generate images incorporating friends or content creators based on their public Instagram posts, designed to enhance personalization. Meta has included an opt-out mechanism in settings for users who prefer their content not be used for AI remixing.
Aggressive AI lab expansion
Meta has pursued an intensive rebuilding strategy for its AI capabilities over the past year, recruiting Wang and other highly compensated researchers to develop models competitive with OpenAI and Anthropic. The effort operates under Meta Superintelligence Labs, which released its first large language model in April. A video generation model is scheduled for completion in the coming months, a Meta spokesperson confirmed.
Cloud monetization strategy emerges
Meta intends to commercialize its AI models by selling access to external developers through a cloud platform, the spokesperson said. This approach would leverage Meta's AI infrastructure to host the technology while generating revenue from usage fees.
