Meta Expands Louisiana Data Center to 5 Gigawatts in $50B AI Push
The rural Richland Parish facility will become one of the world's largest data centers, supporting over 1,000 jobs and reshaping the local economy.
Meta scales AI infrastructure in rural Louisiana
Meta announced Monday it is expanding its Richland Parish, Louisiana data center to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity, positioning the facility as one of the largest data centers ever built. The expansion brings Meta's total investment in the region above $50 billion, representing one of the largest AI infrastructure commitments globally.
The facility, which broke ground in December 2024, is expected to support more than 1,000 jobs once operational. Louisiana businesses have already secured over $1.6 billion in contracts related to the project, according to Meta.
Beyond the data center itself, Meta plans to invest more than $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including roads, water systems, and wastewater facilities. The company stated it will cover the data center's energy, water, and infrastructure costs directly.
Economic transformation in Richland Parish
The project is delivering immediate economic benefits to Richland Parish, a rural community of approximately 20,000 residents. Tax revenue generated by the data center has enabled the local school district to increase annual teacher bonuses from $10,000 to more than $50,000.
"It's life-altering for our teachers and their families, and it's transforming our schools," said Richland Parish School District Superintendent Sheldon Jones in a statement. Jones noted the investment has also helped attract stronger teacher candidates to the district.
Meta negotiated an energy agreement with Entergy Louisiana that the company projects will save local customers more than $2 billion over 20 years.
Workforce development initiatives
Meta is committing $5 million to Louisiana Delta Community College to establish scholarships for residents training for data center positions. Starting with the class of 2026, all Richland Parish high school graduates will qualify for full scholarships covering data center-related trade programs.
The scholarship program aligns with Meta's broader America's Workforce Academy initiative, announced in June, which provides free skilled-trades training with guaranteed employment for graduates.
Why it matters
Meta's Louisiana expansion illustrates how hyperscale AI infrastructure investments are reshaping economic development patterns. Rather than concentrating exclusively in traditional tech hubs, companies building AI compute capacity are increasingly targeting rural areas with available land, power infrastructure, and favorable tax structures. The Richland Parish project demonstrates how a single facility can fundamentally alter a small community's economic trajectory—though it also raises questions about sustainability, energy demands, and whether such concentrated investments create resilient local economies or dependencies on single corporate actors.
