JumpCloud adds governance controls for autonomous AI agents

Identity and access management provider JumpCloud has expanded its Agentic IAM platform to give IT teams direct oversight of autonomous AI agents operating within their organizations. The update places agents alongside employees and devices in the corporate directory, requiring every agent to have a named human owner before it can execute.

The enhancement addresses a significant gap in enterprise security. According to JumpCloud's July survey of IT leaders, only 21 percent of organizations have implemented governance controls for nonhuman identities — the lowest adoption rate among 10 recommended AI security practices. Meanwhile, nonhuman identities now outnumber people at 83 percent of surveyed organizations.

Four core capabilities

The release centers on four technical capabilities. First, every registered agent receives a unique identity, enabling administrators to audit its actions or revoke access without affecting the employee who deployed it. Second, the platform detects Model Context Protocol servers established outside official channels and routes them through JumpCloud's AI Gateway.

Third, existing device trust and access policies that govern sanctioned software now extend to AI tools. Fourth, a privileged access management server built on the protocol will ship in the fourth quarter, designed to eliminate the shared API keys agents currently rely on.

Privileged access grants now apply directly to agents and expire when the task they were issued for completes. JumpCloud says this approach allows companies to direct AI at legacy systems without rebuilding infrastructure.

Why it matters

AI agents don't simply query systems — they act inside them, executing transactions and modifying data. That operational reality makes identity the control plane for AI security, according to Rahul Kamdar, JumpCloud's senior vice president of product. Without governance, organizations face a growing population of autonomous actors with unclear ownership and unconstrained access. The gap between AI adoption and identity controls creates exposure that traditional security models weren't designed to address.

Platform evolution

JumpCloud launched Agentic IAM in April and released a Google Cloud version in June as part of an expanded partnership. The company first shipped AI features in January, including shadow AI detection.

Joel Rennich, senior vice president of product management at JumpCloud, said AI agents are changing how identity management functions. The tools move quickly, he noted, and IT departments need visibility into which agents exist, who owns them, and what resources they can access.

Based in Louisville, Colorado, JumpCloud has raised $408 million across 10 funding rounds. Sapphire Ventures led the most recent Series F of $159 million five years ago, valuing the company at $2.56 billion.
