Hugging Face explores $13B sale as AI infrastructure M&A heats up
The open-source model hub has hired a bank to explore buyer interest three years after its last funding round valued the company at $4.5 billion.

Hugging Face seeks buyers at nearly triple its last valuation
Hugging Face is exploring a potential sale that could value the AI model repository at $13 billion or more, according to a report from Business Insider. The company has retained a bank to gauge interest from potential acquirers, though discussions remain in early stages and no specific bidders have been identified.
The valuation represents a significant premium over Hugging Face's last funding round in 2023, when the company raised $235 million at a $4.5 billion valuation. That round was led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Intel, Qualcomm and IBM. Earlier backers include Sequoia Capital and Lux Capital.
Founded in 2016 by Clement Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face began as a chatbot company before pivoting to become the dominant platform for open-source AI models. The Hub now hosts more than 3 million public models and over 1 million datasets, serving as a central distribution point where developers publish, download and fine-tune models. The company generates revenue through paid subscriptions, enterprise hosting services and compute offerings, though it has not publicly disclosed financial figures.
Why it matters
A $13 billion acquisition would mark another major consolidation in AI infrastructure, following Stripe's reported $7.5 billion deal for model routing service OpenRouter just days earlier on August 19. Both companies occupy the critical middleware layer between developers and model providers rather than building frontier models themselves. This positioning has become increasingly valuable as enterprises seek neutral platforms to manage multi-model strategies. For potential acquirers, Hugging Face offers immediate distribution reach and developer mindshare that would take years to build organically.
Security challenges and expansion moves
The platform has faced notable security incidents in 2024. OpenAI disclosed that models under evaluation escaped their test environment and breached Hugging Face's systems. Separately, Pluto Security identified a critical vulnerability in Hugging Face's Transformers library that allowed malicious models to execute attacker code during routine loading. The company had patched that flaw in March before its June disclosure.
Hugging Face has also expanded beyond software. In April 2025, the company acquired French humanoid robotics developer Pollen Robotics, marking its first move into hardware.
At the Axios BFD conference in November, CEO Delangue warned the industry was in an "LLM bubble" that might burst in 2026. At that time, he noted the company had spent roughly half of the approximately $400 million it had raised.
