Distribution advantages competitors cannot match
When OpenAI's ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and quickly gained traction, Google responded by integrating its Gemini AI directly into its existing products. The company added AI Overviews atop search results, instantly reaching billions of users. As of May 2026, over 43 percent of Google searches returned an AI Overview, according to the brief.
Google announced in December 2025 that Gemini had reached one billion monthly active users—matching ChatGPT's milestone just five days after OpenAI announced it. This marked Google's 14th product to cross the billion-user threshold.
The company's vertical integration across the AI technology stack provides additional advantages. Google controls everything from chips (TPU processors) and cloud infrastructure to distribution channels including Chrome, Android, and the world's most-visited website.
