Google's Android Chief Envisions AI Agents Handling Phone Tasks

Google is positioning Android for a future where users spend less time managing their phones and more time letting AI handle routine tasks, according to Sameer Samat, president of Google's Android ecosystem.
In an interview with CNN, Samat outlined a vision where users articulate goals rather than execute step-by-step commands, with AI systems intelligent enough to complete multi-app workflows independently. The company's newly announced Pixel 11 smartphones include features designed to move toward this reality, including a light on the Pixel 11 Pro's back that illuminates when Gemini processes commands.
The multi-step task vision
Samat described scenarios that remain beyond current capabilities but represent Android's three-year planning horizon. An AI agent might review doctor's appointment notes, verify insurance coverage, and schedule an MRI—all without switching between apps or constant user prompting.
"I see a lot of folks, including myself, that are heads down in their phones, trying to get a lot of things done," Samat told CNN. "And if you can give people that time back, five minutes a day, 10 minutes a day, 30 minutes a day, think what you can do with that."
A new Android feature called Halo, arriving later this year, will display an AI agent's progress on assigned tasks. The Pixel 11 devices also introduce Rambler, a tool announced in May that processes spoken input and converts it into cleaned-up text or email, removing verbal tics like "umm" and "like."
Industry-wide agent push
Google's direction aligns with broader smartphone industry momentum. Android powers more than 70 percent of smartphones globally, while Samsung integrates Gemini deeply across its devices. Apple plans to launch an upgraded Siri capable of acting across apps and incorporating personal information later this year. OpenAI released a major ChatGPT upgrade last month focused on more natural conversation.
The shift toward AI agents assumes users will increasingly talk to their devices rather than type and tap. Google designed the Pixel 11 Pro's processing light to help users interact with Gemini without picking up their phone to confirm the assistant is listening.

The race to embed AI agents in smartphones represents a fundamental bet on how billions of people will interact with technology. For Google and Apple, success means defending their platform dominance against ChatGPT's growing consumer presence. But the vision faces significant headwinds: most Americans predict AI will negatively impact society, according to Pew Research, and 79 percent don't trust businesses to use AI responsibly, per a Gallup and Bentley University study. Whether AI agents actually reduce screen time or simply create new forms of device dependency remains an open question with major implications for productivity, attention, and digital well-being.
Samat acknowledged the term "AI" has become loaded. "Instead of talking about the tech, I think one of the things that's been much more of a focus for us is… 'How does it actually help you?'" he said.
