Google Plans €13 Billion AI Data Center Investment in Finland

Google has committed at least €13 billion to build AI infrastructure in Finland over the next two years, marking the company's largest single investment in Europe to date.

The investment will fund data centers designed to power artificial intelligence models, clean energy projects, and community development programs across four Finnish municipalities: Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala. The infrastructure will support several Google services, including its Gemini AI chatbot, according to a company statement released Wednesday.

Why it matters

Finland's combination of cool climate, stable electricity from nuclear plants, and abundant renewable energy from wind and hydro power makes it an increasingly attractive location for energy-intensive AI infrastructure. As tech companies race to expand AI capabilities, securing reliable, cost-effective power sources has become a critical competitive factor. For Finland, the investment offers economic relief as the country faces record unemployment and sluggish growth.

Economic impact and job creation

Google estimates the investment will boost Finland's GDP by €3.6 billion annually and support more than 37,000 jobs across the country. During the construction phase, expected in 2027 and 2028, approximately 16,000 construction jobs will be created.

Once operational, the digital infrastructure will sustain around 7,000 ongoing jobs annually, including on-site facility and technical roles, upstream suppliers, and local businesses supported by the workforce and their families.

"Google's decision is a clear testament to our strengths," said Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in the company statement. "The value of the data economy extends far beyond direct investment into spurring innovation, research and development."

Expanding Nordic footprint

Google's Finnish presence began in 2009 when the company purchased a former paper mill in the coastal city of Hamina and converted it into a data center. The company has gradually expanded its operations in the country since then.

The new investment includes dedicated nature and community funds to support local biodiversity, education, research, and workforce development, alongside the clean energy projects.

Finland has experienced a data center boom in recent years, with dozens of facilities already under construction. Attracting investments in the sector has been a priority for Orpo's right-wing government as it seeks to address economic challenges.

Google emphasized that the investment reflects "Finland's leadership in responsibly building AI infrastructure," positioning the partnership as beneficial for both parties in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
